Practicing Spanish with YouTube
Probably the best way to practice your Spanish listening comprehension is by hearing and trying to understand people speaking Spanish, which is kind of obvious.
If you’re fortunate enough to live someplace where people speak Spanish, you can do this in person. If you have cable, you should be able to get some Spanish language channels. If you’re desperate and have a shortwave radio, you should be able to find some frequencies broadcasting in Spanish.
But if you have access to the internet, one of the best and easiest resources to find people speaking in Spanish is YouTube or other video sharing services.
Watching recorded clips, instead of live TV or radio allows you to listen to the Spanish several times, helping you to understand what is going on, and increasing you listening comprehension. Clips posted on YouTube usually have a short description, which will also help you with picking up the general theme of what is being discussed.
Just searching for the word “noticias”, returns hundreds of video clips of newscasts for you to peruse.
Here’s the first video for that search.
If you want to go ahead and use this video for practice, try to answer the following questions. (If you want answers or help, just post in the comments).
- What country does this newscast come from? (Look for accent, placenames and local vocabulary)
- What are they talking about when they use the term “delitos urbanísicos”?
- Why do people commit delitos urbanísitcos?
- What are the major problems with delitos urbanísticos?
