The ultimate accolade for a blogger: "I will print out this post". -- Thanks Osman!

@Matt- I have experienced something similar with Mexicans, perhaps it also has to do with culture. I do believe in the US it's culturally much more common to grow up singing and grow up around musical instruments than in Mexico. Think of all those kids who had to take piano lessons... Maybe I'll have to do some research and publish a hypothesis.

It's funny you should mention musical ability. I've had this private theory that I"ve never mentioned to anyone, but it seems like in Latin America (or at least in Costa Rica), hardly anyone can sing in tune, it's really weird and I'm not trying to be racist or discriminate, I think it has something to do with the Spanish language or with the culture in some strange way that I can't yet understand. Do you know what I mean?

Hi there "talk spanish", I agree that passion is very important, and if the passion, the desire to learn Spanish is backed up with solid methods and hard work, then you'll learn the language.

Good post giving sound advice. I began learning Spanish around 15 years ago and have wondered often about many of the things suggested in your article.

As anybody successful in any field and they will tell you passion is a major driver. I believe this passion has to come from within. Anyone has the potential to learn to speak Spanish as a second language (or any other language of course); let's be honest, most of us learnt to speak our various mother tongues as babies without any concept of what language is.

Having said this, learning a second language is difficult and requires something more than a desire to speak another language because, heck, it would be nice to!
