Blue jay = Arrendajo azul in Spanish

by David

blue jay = arrendajo azul I ran into a small vocabulary problem with the term “blue jay”, I needed it for a translation and couldn’t find a reliable source documenting how to say it in Spanish. To begin with the blue jay’s habitat is in eastern Canada and United States, so it’s not a very common bird in Spanish-speaking areas. “Jay” is arrendajo in many dictionaries, but I couldn’t find bluejay until I found a Wikipedia article on it. The article states that “arrendajo azul” and “urraca azul” are the names for this bird. In some more research I found that the blue jay is also called Stellar’s Jay* or Arendajo de Stellar en español. I’m liking Wikipedia more and more as a source of fairly reliable information.

* I stand corrected, the Blue jay and Stellar’s jay are different varieties as Kristine points out in the comments.

Stellar’s Jay and the Blue Jay that you have in your picture are two different birds. The Stellar’s Jay lives in the Western US and this Blue Jay in the picture is the common Blue Jay found in Central and Eastern US.
